When you take a glance at the Oakville boys cross country team’s roster, you notice one thing right away. There’s an abundance of seniors in the Tigers’ lineup.
Head coach Arlee Conners believes that this year’s team could surprise a lot of people who follow the Tigers.
“We’re coming around slowly but surely,” Conners said. “I think we have a good group that’s going to make things interesting this year.”
One of the seniors to keep an eye on this year is Adrian Kordic, who had a solid showing at last year’s district championships.
“Adrian joined the cross country team for the first time last year,” Conners said. “He’s come in focused, and I think he’s going to be a very good runner for us this year.”
Junior Lucas Wiegman returns to the Tigers’ starting lineup after a strong performance at last year’s district championships as a sophomore. Wiegman is coming off a solid track season after just missing the state championships in two events.
“I believe Lucas is going to make some big strides this season,” Conners said. “He’s been one of our top runners the last two years and just missed state track in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters last year. I believe that’s going to motivate him to be successful this year.”
As typical with student athletes, many runners are involved with a variety of activities in addition to their sport. This is true for seniors Luke Meschke and Alex Sokolik who not only run cross country, but also perform in the marching band.
“Alex is probably our second or third top runner, who runs track as well,” Conners said. “I expect Luke to go out with a bang this season. The one thing about both of them is that you never see them complain about all the time they put in between cross country and band.”
Senior Justin Duke returns to the varsity lineup for the 2025 campaign and is penciled in as another runner that’s poised to have a big year at Oakville.
“Justin started last year as a junior and became one of our top five runners,” Conners said. “This will be his second year on varsity, and I think that experience is going to do him a lot of good this season.”
The Tigers’ head coach is also looking for a successful senior campaign from Hayden McEachran and Casey Maddox.
