While swimming may be considered an individual sport by many, the Mehlville boys swimming and diving team is struggling to form a team this season with a total of just five swimmers, though first-year head coach Mark Hromnak is focused on reversing the trend of declining numbers one day at a time.
“We only have a handful of kids this season which is unfortunate,” Hromnak said. “It’s going to be a tough year, but we’re going to get better and make personal progress every day of the season.”
Juniors Noah Ryan and Jacob Meadows will compete in the freestyle and backstroke events for the Panthers this season.
“I’ve known both Noah and Jacob since their freshman year,” Hromnak said. “I’m seeing some growth and maturity from both of them.”
Joshua Vanecek is a well-rounded junior that has the ability to compete in just about any event in the Panther’s lineup.
“Joshua’s been with the team the last two years and he’s a leader that can swim all of the strokes,” Hromnak said. “He’ll be able to swim whatever events he wants to swim this year.”
Another junior to keep an eye on is Liam Kienbusch.
“Liam swam with us last year and is our fastest swimmer on the team,” Hromnak said. “He’s doing really well so far this season.”
Hromnak is also looking towards freshman Elisha Brown to compete in the breaststroke events this season.
“Elisha has a phenomenal kick,” Hromnak said. “We’re really working with him to become a breaststroke specialist for us.”
