Memorial Day services scheduled at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery

The annual Memorial Day services at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, with a procession to the Old Flag Circle where ceremonies will be conducted.

Command Sgt. Maj. Douglas Chiles Sr. will be the guest speaker. Chiles, currently with the 169th Engineer Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, has a military career spanning 26 years.

The U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-Amer-ica, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., will perform the national anthem and the St. Louis Gateway Singers will provide musical se-lections.

This year’s service, which is open to the public, will include a 1860-era horse- drawn hearse.

On Sunday, May 25, the Boy Scouts of the Gravois Trail District of the St. Louis Area Council will conduct their 53rd annual Memorial Day Good Turn Ceremony.

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, unit leaders and their families will continue a tradition that dates back to 1950.

Joe Frank, past American Legion national commander, will be guest speaker for this time-honored tradition. This is done on Sunday so that at dawn on Memorial Day every grave will have an American flag placed by it.

The Jefferson Barracks National Ceme-tery currently is under construction with a $6.5 million construction project to re-place the water distribution system, roadways and interment shelters, update buildings and add more grave sites, according to a news release. Some areas currently are under construction.
