Mehlville to receive an additional $5,000 grant for tennis courts

An additional $5,000 in grant money will go toward the construction of a tennis-court complex at Bernard Middle School.

Superintendent Eric Knost told the board at its meeting last week he secured the grant Dec. 12, which brings the grant total for the project to $62,500. The $5,000 grant, according to Knost, is from the Missouri Valley U.S. Tennis Association.

The district already has received grants from the U.S. Tennis Association ($37,500) and USTA Missouri Valley ($20,000). Mehlville also received a $21,730 rebate from American Express, which it put toward the cost of the tennis courts.

The Mehlville Board of Education approved Byrne & Jones Construction’s $513,896 bid in October. Byrne & Jones was the low bid, which was reduced to the district’s $450,000 budget due to the grants and rebates.

Knost also said there is a potential for another $5,000 grant, but he will not know if the district secured the grant until 2013.

Construction on the tennis courts began in October.
