Mehlville School District will hold annual tax rate hearing Thursday

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article included the cent differences between last year’s rates in each individual tax category compared to this year’s proposed rates, however, last year’s rates used in the calculations did not include the Proposition A levy. Compare 2022’s rates with the proposed rates in 2023 for each category in the September 2022 news release from the school district. Note that rates for individual tax categories in the district’s press release do not include the 3.5 cents for Prop A, or the 12-cent tax levy for Proposition S general obligation bonds.

The Mehlville Board of Education will conduct a public hearing Thursday before setting the district’s tax rates for 2023.

The public hearing is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 in the Mehlville High School Library, 3200 Lemay Ferry Road.

Board members will consider the following proposed property tax rates per $100 of assessed valuation. These rates represent the sum of the permanent tax rate plus the temporary Proposition A tax.

• Residential: $3.7268

• Commercial: $4.2195

• Agricultural: $4.7180

• Personal property: $4.8161

The district’s proposed overall “blended” rate, which is not levied but used for state calculations, is $3.9698, compared to the 2022 blended rate of $3.6784. It includes a 31-cent increase from Proposition E.

Because this was a reassessment year, residential increased 18.2% and personal property increased 6.2%. The consumer price index is 6.5% based on calendar year 2022.
