Mayor provides a plethora of Most Misguided Quotes

Since his election in April 2014, Sunset Hills Mayor Mark Furrer has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to provide this newspaper with a plethora of candidates for our Most Misguided Quotes of the Year.

In April, we

that 2015 was off to a very strong start for Most Misguided Quotes, in which we chronicle the most misguided, misinformed and misleading statements of the year. We wrote then, “… Furrer gave us so many contenders this quarter that we may devote a future column to his Most Misguided Quotes.”

And Furrer’s penchant for delivering candidates for Most Misguided Quotes of the Year has been relentless. Consider these dandies:

• In an effort to force an up-or-down vote on

that Alderman Dee Baebler was violating the First Amendment for blocking a resident from her aldermanic Facebook page, Furrer asked aldermen, “Do you have the guts to stand up?”

The irony was not lost on us that shortly after his

in July 2014, Furrer deleted his mayoral Facebook page after cyclists and people nationwide flooded the page with negative comments. The page has never been restored.

• Of Baebler, Aldermen Pat Fribis and Richard Gau and then-Aldermen Scott Haggerty and Jan Hoffmann, Furrer

, “Now that Pat and her minions are in the minority and no longer control the city, I guarantee things will improve greatly after April 28. Give us a chance to recover from the circus of Haggerty, Baebler, Fribis, Gau and Hoffmann …”

Circus, really? The only circus we’ve seen in Sunset Hills is the one with Furrer as head ringmaster.

• On the board

, Furrer said, “Needless to say I’m sickened by my aldermen, I hope you’re proud of yourselves … I just cannot believe that they’ve done this to you. They are so power hungry and so greedy. To continue the cliques they’ve had for 26 years, 27 years … Pat Fribis is the next one I’m replacing (on the parks board). This is just absolutely unprecedented, and I could just scream.”

Besides the fact that board members are not his aldermen, perhaps he’ll hold his breath until he turns blue, too.

With more than three months left in the year, we’re certain that Furrer will toss us a few more candidates for Most Misguided Quotes of the Year. It would seem a certainty that one or more of Furrer’s comments are destined for inclusion in our 2015 list.
