While the Flyers may have been a bit slow out of the starting gate, the Lindbergh’s boys basketball team is now operating at peak efficiency.
Nathan Biggs’ squad is currently, as of The Call’s press time, riding a eight-game winning streak while preparing to enter the postseason. With a record of 7-9 earlier this season, the Flyers’, who have won eight of their last nine games, now sit at 15-9.
“We are playing well as a team right now for sure,” Biggs said. “We started the season a little bit slow, which was expected after losing six seniors from a 22-win team last year. That being said, we have a lot of talent, but lacked the experience to close out close games early in the year. As the year has progressed, players have gained experience and players have started to play with more confidence, we have found more success.”
David Hardesty and Alex Hessler have both been key for the Flyers this season. Hardesty, a senior, is leading the team with just over 13 points per game, while Hessler, a junior, has averaged over 10 points per game during the season. In 12 of his last 15 games, Hessler has scored in the double digits.
“Alex Hessler is a very good, athletic and skilled player,” Biggs said. “He started many games for us last year as a sophomore on a very successful team. He had a bit of a slower start this year as he adjusted to being a larger emphasis on our opponent’s scouting report. Lately, he has settled in and has been playing with a lot of confidence. I’m excited to see what the rest of this season and next year looks like for him.”
A goal for any team is to always be playing its best as the postseason begins, and it’s been no different with Lindbergh. Biggs said his squad is clicking on all cylinders as the playoffs approach.
“There is no doubt that we are playing our best basketball at the right time of year,” Biggs said. “As we head into a competitive district, it is nice to be playing with confidence and rolling as a team down the final stretch.”
The Flyers hosted Oakville on Feb. 21. Lindbergh came out on top, defeating the Tigers 66-59. On Feb. 25, Lindbergh faced Parkway South, narrowly securing a 51-49 win.
Lindbergh will close out regular season play with a game against John Burroughs on Feb. 27.
