The Lindbergh Flyers girls basketball team improved to 12-9 on the season with a 42-26 win over Parkway North on Feb. 6.

Flyers head coach Michelle Spencer said that while the team got the win, there are still things to work on.

“Overall, it was a nice conference win,” Spencer said. “We had more turnovers than I would like, but we had balanced scoring and executed our defensive game plan.”

The Flyers didn’t waste any time taking control of the game, jumping out to a 15- 2 lead in the first quarter.

“We came out hot,” Spencer said. “We created some easy buckets off the press and pounded the paint inside. It’s always a big boost starting a game well. It gives us a lot of confidence throughout the game.”

After closing out the first half with a 22-8 lead, Lindbergh put together a 13-5 run in the third quarter to extend the lead.

Lindbergh had eight different players score in the game. Spencer said the team has had success this season due to so many different players being able to score.

“I think that’s why we’ve had a lot of success this year,” she said. “Different players step up on any given night. That’s what we want, multiple players scoring, sharing the basketball and a balanced attack.”

Rory Conboy led the way with nine points, while Elizabeth Mertzlufft tossed in eight points. Sam Colvin had seven points, and MJ Abercrombie and Kate Ritter each had six points in the victory. Maeve Conboy, Madison Mertzlufft, and Katelyn Swift each had two points for the Flyers.

Spencer also mentioned that Conboy is closing in on 1,000 points and a career rebound record.

“MJ has become a consistent scorer for us especially from the perimeter, hitting two big threes tonight,” she said. “Sam is a big defensive presence in the paint, altering shots.”
