With continued success year after year, the Lindbergh Flyers boys tennis squad has built high expectations as to what is presumed of the team each season.
Following last season’s 19-4 record, head coach Bryan Maier said he is looking to get his varsity players ready for another standout year.
“We will focus on maintaining high standards of success while helping new players build the necessary skills and strategies to thrive in matches,” Maier said. “We want to build on past momentum and keep developing new players in the program.”
Returning this season for the Flyers are seniors Dillon Phruttitum and George Moran, as well as sophomore Nathan Phruttitum. Along with the three returning players, Maier is also excited about the addition of freshman Nicholas Kaade.
“Kaade is expected to be a key contributor this year,” Maier said.
As far as Lindbergh’s strength this season, Maier points to Phruttitum and Moran.
“Our experience at the top of the lineup, especially with Dillon and George, will be a strength,” Maier said. “They have been integral to a combined 50-17 over the past three seasons.”
The Flyers are anticipating stiff competition this season from Kirkwood, St. Louis University High School (SLUH) and Oakville. The squad will also compete in the Edwardsville Invitational and the Triad Invitational.
With a tennis program that has become one of the strongest in the area, Maier knows what to look for early on in the season. He said he has seen good progress early in practice.
“They are a hardworking group,” Maier said. “They are focused on improving skills and match play.”
Lindbergh will open the season with an away match against Rockwood Summit on March 27 at 4 p.m.
