The Oakville Junior Varsity Hockey Cheerleading Team received top honors at this year’s Mid-States High School Hockey Cheerleading Championships at Lindbergh High School.
The junior varsity squad placed first in the cheer category, first in the chant category, second in the dance category and was named the First-Place Best All-Around Junior Varsity Team for 2003-2004.
Oakville fans came out in force to support their hockey cheerleaders, according to a news release. Players, coaches, players’ parents and other family members of the cheerleaders were present.
“They are a spectacular group of girls,” Janine Dulay, Tigers Cheerleaders head coach, stated in a news release. “Wendy Thomas, the JV assistant coach, and the girls worked so hard, practiced long hours and gave every ounce of energy they had to achieve this much-deserved end result.
“Wendy is to be commended for preparing the girls so thoroughly for this competition. This is the first time many of these girls have competed at this level.
“The pressure of the day as well as nerves can really play a part in how successful they are. They were having fun and were relaxed. This should be a memorable time in their life, filled with excitement and pride. Nothing prepared me for how proud these girls made me. I am so blessed to be a part of such an outstanding, hard-working group of young ladies,” Dulay stated.
