Gertrude E. Maring

Gertrude Elizabeth “Trudy” Maring (nee Horstman), 102, died July 8.

Mrs. Maring was born May 14, 1910, in Alma, the daughter of H.B. and Eliza Horstman (nee Hemme). After graduating from Alma High School in 1929, she attended Huff’s Business College in Kansas City and worked as a comptometer operator and nanny until 1939.

She married the Rev. Wilbur “Jack” Maring of Aullville Oct. 25, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alma.

Mrs. Maring was active in the Lutheran congregations where her husband was pastor in Wellsville, Scott City, Oakville and also in semiretirement at Jonesburg and Warrenton. She held offices in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for the Cape Girardeau zone and the South St. Louis zone.

Mrs. Maring was active in 4-H work as a project and community leader and was recognized by the state of Missouri for her outstanding service.

She also served as the historian for Faith Lutheran Church in Oakville from 1961 to 2001.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and David Spencer; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jane Maring and Paul and Kit Maring; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and “sister,” Lynola Sylvester. Mrs. Maring was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, “Jack” Maring, and sisters, Oletha and Marie.

Services and visitation were at Faith Lutheran Church in Oakville. Burial was in St. Trinity Cemetery.
