Friendship Village to sponsor quilt contest

More than 100,000 stitches will be featured during a week of quilting events at Friendship Village Sunset Hills.

Fountain View, the free-standing assisted living community at Friendship Village Sunset Hills, will sponsor its fourth annual Quilt Show and Competition that will culminate with the award of a $1,000 check to the local church voted to have entered the best quilt.

Nine or more local churches will participate in the competition with the quilts on public view for public voting at Friendship Village Sunset Hills’ Fountain View.

More than 400 people voted in last year’s competition with the top prize going to St. Paul Catholic Church, Fenton.

Hung in Fountain View’s main and private dining rooms, the quilts will be on display from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from Nov. 4 through Nov. 11.

To encourage participation and voting on the quilts, Friendship Village Sunset Hills plans a public open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4.

The community will conduct a quilters’ coffee from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7 for quilters, members of the participating churches and interested parties to share quilting ideas, experiences, problems and suggestions.

Besides the quilts entered in the competition by the churches, Friendship Village Sunset Hills will display quilts made by its residents and employees. Only the local church quilts, however, qualify for the competition and the $1,000 award.

Competition rules allow the entry of quilts produced by participating church quilting clubs or by individual church members and bar mass produced, machine made or purchased quilts.

Participating churches include St. Paul Catholic Church, Fenton; Our Lady of Providence; Most Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eureka; St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Kirkwood; St. Mark’s Church; St. Dominic Savio; St. Bridget of Kildare, Pacific; St. Anthony of Padua; and Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church, Webster Groves.
