Fire district sets districtwide Open House

The Mehlville Fire Protection District will host a districtwide Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, to kick off Fire Prevention Week.

Each engine house will be open to the public to enjoy a meet-and-greet with firefighters, tour the facilities and have an opportunity to talk to experts about fire safety tips and other topics.

“We look forward to hosting our Open House for Fire Prevention Week,” MFPD Deputy Chief Kevin Reis stated in a district news release. “This is a fun, family oriented opportunity to have an inside look at what firefighters do on a daily basis.”

Fire Prevention Week’s theme this year is “Protect Your Family From Fire.” Visitors will learn the most effective ways to prevent fire in their homes and the importance of home fire escape planning.

“This year’s theme of protecting families from fire stresses the importance of the citizens’ role in fire prevention. This gives us an opportunity to teach residents how to be active in their own fire safety,” Reis stated.

The event is designed to be fun for the whole family and includes fire safety coloring books and helmets for children — while supplies last. Firefighters also will perform rescue equipment demonstrations and discuss other aspects of their jobs.

Blood pressure and blood glucose checks will be available.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a camera as children can have their pictures taken on the fire trucks. All seven engine houses are participating, pending emergency calls.
