Fifth annual Route 66 Car Cruise set Aug. 9

The fifth annual Crestwood-Sunset Hills Route 66 Car Cruise, set for Saturday, Aug. 9, will offer a free day of family fun.

Kicking off the festivities is an automobile parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. at the Sunset Hills Community Center, 3915 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The parade will travel north on Lindbergh Boulevard, east on historic Route 66 —Watson Road — and end at Crestwood Plaza, 109 Crestwood Plaza.

The mall will host a full day of events, which are free and open to the public, according to a news release. Family festivities include games, crafts and other activities for children from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Bike Decorating Contest will take place at 11:15 a.m and a Kids Kruise is scheduled for noon.

Children ages 10 and younger are invited to decorate their trikes, bikes and big wheels and ride around a track for a chance to win the prize for the Best Decorated Vehicle. All Kids Kruise participants will receive an attendance prize.

For adults, a Poker Run and Scavenger Hunt will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a chance to win $500 in cash and gift cards to sponsor establishments. Three bands will perform on the stage at the mall with Gentlemen Bandits at noon, Hardwire at 3 p.m. and Yukon Jake at 7 p.m.

The Route 66 Classic Car Cruise Committee recently announced that Project Backpack St. Louis has been selected as recipient of the event’s 2014 charity grant. Each year, the event donates excess revenues to a local charity that is providing a needed benefit to the community.
