This fall, Lindbergh High School was announced to be a Special Olympics Unified Champion School. The award was presented by ESPN, and it was publicly announced on Oct. 30.
Only six school districts in Missouri have received the honor.
“Becoming a nationally recognized Unified Champion School is no small accomplishment — it highlights the ways our Flyers community has embraced opportunities for students of all abilities to learn, lead, compete and grow together,” said Leslie Auer, Special Education Coordinator at Lindbergh High School.
Lindbergh Schools’ chief communications officer Beth Johnston says that the recognition is in large part due to the work of the Student Council at LHS, “whose leadership has elevated inclusion schoolwide.” The student group has worked with Special Olympics to organize activities like the Polar Plunge; they also have hosted a Unified Softball game and a Unified Cornhole Tournament — games and tournaments that involve people with and without disabilities.
