With just four swimmers on their roster, the Mehlville boys swimming and diving team is focused on finding success this season in the relay events.
“We have a small team again this year,” Panthers head coach Mark Hromnak said. “The only difference between this year and last year is that we have four swimmers on the team, which is enough for a relay.”
Sophomore Logan Brotherton will be a “jack of all trades” this season as the Panthers will rely on him to swim a variety of events.
“Logan can pretty much swim any event,” Hromnak said. “If we have him swim all three relays, it’s my guess that he’ll probably choose to swim the 100-yard freestyle.”
Freshman Sebastian Vaughn enters his first season with the Panthers, in which Hromnak sees him swimming the breaststroke leg in the 200-yard medley relay as well as the freestyle relays.
“Sebastian is a pretty decent swimmer who’s already coming into high school with a swimming background,” Hromnak said. “He’ll not only swim in both freestyle relays as well as the breaststroke leg in the medley relay.”
The Panthers will have freshman Liam Theiss compete in the freestyle relays as well as the backstroke leg in the medley relay.
“I’m not too sure as to how much formal training he’s had,” Hromnak said. “I believe that once we get the fundamentals down, we’ll then begin working on his speed.”
Mehlville freshman Gradin Cowin joins the Panthers this season as a freestyle specialist.
“With Bradin, we’re pretty much starting from scratch with him,” Hromnak said. “The only events I see him swimming this season are the freestyle events and maybe some backstroke.”
The Panthers opened the 2025 season at home on Sept. 2 against Eureka.
