Cub Scouts gear up for Pinewood Derby at Crestwood mall

Local Cub Scouts will carry on the 50-plus year tradition of Pinewood Derby car racing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Westfield Shoppingtown Crestwood, Watson and Sappington roads.

Almost 200 Cub Scouts from south county will descend on the mall near the AMC Theater to compete against one another. The event historically has been a meeting of the best of the best, as boys who have been successful in their pack’s Pinewood Derby come to pit their handcrafted cars against other winning Cub Scouts to see who truly has the fastest car.

All Cub Scouts with a car are eligible to participate. Participants receive a patch, certificate and chance to earn one of 16 different trophies. Trophies will be presented to the fastest cars in every division — Tiger, first grade; Wolf, second grade; Bear, third grade; and Webelos, grades four and five.

Check-in will begin at 10 a.m. with races starting at 11 a.m. The cost is $5.
