The Crestwood Police Department, through a partnership with Project Triage, recently received individual trauma kits, or ITKs, for all of the department’s officers.

The ITKs were purchased by Project Triage with funds made available through charitable donations by Crestwood residents and the Accent Group, a member of the Crestwood business community.

“The Crestwood Police Department strives to continue providing an excellent service at an unparalleled value to our community. We are extremely thankful to Project Triage and to the members of our community who made receiving this lifesaving equipment possible through their generous donations,” Police Chief Frank Arnoldy stated in a news release.

Two out of three police officers killed in the line of duty die from blood loss associated with a traumatic injury. The ITKs were designed specifically for law enforcement officers to carry in the event of a serious blood-loss injury to themselves or others.

Project Triage is a nonprofit organization made up entirely of unpaid volunteers, and relies solely on private donations. Project Triage was founded by retired Virgin Islands Police Chief Christopher Howell, who was shot in the line of duty in August 2012 and was able to use an ITK to save his life.

Each ITK is registered with Project Triage, and if used, the donor is notified.
