An inmate who escaped custody last week while being treated at Mercy Hospital South is back in custody after an all-day manhunt across much of south St. Louis to locate him.

Tommy Wayne Boyd, 45, was being treated at Mercy Hospital South in the 10000 block of Kennerly Road in South County when he walked out of the hospital in the early morning hours on Sept. 21.

Boyd, who was being held at the Potosi Correctional Facility serving a 30-year sentence for statutory sodomy, had been transported to the hospital for treatment of an unknown issue the day prior.

Surveillance video from the hospital shows Boyd walking out of the hospital unsupervised.

After reported sightings across south St. Louis County, as well as Tower Grove Park in St. Louis during the day Thursday, Boyd was located and taken into custody without incident later that night in the 7300 hundred block of Watson Road in Shrewsbury.

The police department’s Special Response Unit was following up on leads when Boyd was located and taken into custody.

“This arrest was the culmination of local, state, and federal law enforcement collaborating to keep our public safe,” the St. Louis County Police Department stated in a news release Thursday. “Thank you to the media and our community who provided numerous tips to assist in locating this dangerous felon. Our residents are safer tonight with Boyd in custody.”
