After two years of vacancy, the code enforcement officer position for the City of Green Park has finally been filled.

At the city’s Sept. 18 Board of Aldermen meeting, William Dorsey was appointed as the new code enforcement officer following a 5-1 vote. Per James Mello, city administrator and city clerk for Green Park, Dorsey was chosen because “he has a long history with residential construction, is familiar with codes and standards, has a flexible work schedule and has a good temperament.”

“He’s a South County guy,” Mayor Tim Thuston said of Dorsey. “He had a construction company for years … so he’s qualified. He’s built homes from foundation to roof. Even in Green Park he has remodeled several homes. He’s fully aware of codes and conditions and so forth.”

The duties of this position are fairly straightforward, though a specific procedure has not been finalized and is subject to changes as week-to-week workflow is redefined by the city.  Simplified, Dorsey will receive an email from city hall with the complaints that have been received. He will then drive to each complaint location and document what he sees. On the way to each location, he will look for other violations of city code. After investigating, he will send the city what he has found and it will issue citations.

A start date has not yet been set, but he will start once payroll is finalized. He has agreed to work for $20 per hour for about five hours a week, though his hours will be contingent upon the amount of work needed.

The city chose five hours as the average amount of time needed to complete the job each week as it takes approximately three hours to drive fully around the city and “another two hours of tabulating code enforcement issues identified, sending emails and pictures, etc.” according to Mello.
