The Bayless School District will sponsor its annual Souper Bowl for Hunger dinner and silent auction fundraiser for the Affton Christian Food Pantry on the Friday before the Super Bowl.
This year, the sixth annual event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the cafeteria at Bayless Elementary School, 4531 Weber Road. The nationally recognized charitable event features the artwork of Bayless artists, who create special colorful hand-glazed soup bowls for the occasion, and soups and desserts prepared by Bayless culinary arts students.
Students, teachers, administrators and members of the 15 churches that comprise the food pantry volunteer at the event.
The Souper Bowl Art Exhibit features artwork from Bayless students in fifth grade through 12th grade, along with a bowl design competition with ceramic bowls that students have designed and decorated for display.
The annual event began in the fall of 2012 after Bayless High School students toured the food pantry near the school, Affton Christian Food Pantry, 4960 Heege Road. They wanted to start a project to fill the shelves of the pantry and raise awareness of hunger in the community. The event also serves as a service-learning initiative for visual and culinary-arts students.
The district earned national recognition for the event last year with a spotlight on the website at souperbowl.org.
