Annual Turtle Soup and Fish Fry set Sunday

The Sappington-Concord Historical So-ciety and the Concord Farmers’ Club will sponsor their annual Turtle Soup and Fish Fry from noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Concord Farmers’ Club, 10140 Concord School Road.

Farmers’ Club members will begin preparing more than 850 gallons of soup at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning to have it ready to serve at noon. The recipe for the soup is a well-guarded secret of some of the senior members of the club, according to a news release.

Turtle soup is a rarity in Missouri because it is illegal to sell turtle meat in Missouri and Illinois. Therefore, a society member travels to Kentucky each year to purchase a supply of meat, pack it in dry ice and bring it back to St. Louis.

Chairman Ken Gapsch and club President Harold Koirtyohann promise there will be no delay getting served as two food lines will be available. Folks may eat in the open-air shade of the club grounds or in the comfort of the air conditioned Farmers’ Club.

Carry-outs also will be available. All containers will be provided by the society.

Entertainment will be provided by the Joey James Orchestra, a well-known band in the Concord Farmers’ Club circle.

Parking is available on the club grounds and at nearby Sperreng Middle School or Concord School.
