The Affton High School girls soccer team has ridden a wave of highs and lows this season, currently sitting at an even 10-10 record with one game left in the regular season. But with district competition on the horizon, head coach Chanel Barcom believes her squad is finding its rhythm at just the right time.
“We’ve had our ups and downs this season for sure,” Barcom said. “There is still work we need to focus on, but we’re hoping to continue the winning streak we’re on.”
That recent surge includes victories over Parkway North (2-1) on May 1, Bayless (3-1) on May 5 and Ritenour (5-3) on May 8. These wins have reinvigorated team spirit after back-to-back shutout losses to Pattonville and Windsor on April 29 and April 30.
“Winning after those losses really picked the team’s morale up,” said Barcom. “We’re using this time before districts to tighten things up and prepare to play to our strengths.”
Among those strengths are standout performances from several key players. Senior Alexis Boyer has led the way with 12 goals and 28 points, even while battling injuries throughout the season.
“Alexis is having a great senior year,” Barcom noted. “Even when she isn’t at 100 percent, she still delivers quality play.”
The future of the team looks bright as well. Freshman Olivia Welte has made an immediate impact with 11 goals and 27 points. Her versatility has been a major asset, as she’s played in nearly every position on the field.
“Olivia has been phenomenal,” Barcom said. “She’s played defense, midfield, and forward. I’m excited to see what her next three years bring.”
Other key contributors include Maggie Pike and Ella Cilic, each with five goals, as well as Piper Thomas and Tammy Jackson, who have chipped in with three goals apiece.
Looking ahead to districts, Barcom emphasized the importance of sticking to the team’s identity.
“When we move the ball and play simple, collective soccer, we’re successful,” she said. “If we play to our strengths, I believe we can go far.”
The Cougars will look to close out the regular season on a winning note with a game against Mehlville on May 14.
