Unincorporated St. Louis County voters reject Manchester’s annexation proposal

St. Louis County voters rejected a measure on Nov. 7 that would have annexed a portion of unincorporated St. Louis County north and east of Manchester into the city.

The bid to annex more than two square miles of unincorporated county failed on Nov. 7, with unincorporated county voters voting 78% against the proposal. The measure did win approval among Manchester voters.

Annexation requires a simple majority of voters in both the proposed annexation area and the city itself.

According to the unofficial election results from St. Louis County, Manchester voters were 79% in favor of annexation, with 2,800 votes cast in a city with 18,000 residents. Meanwhile, 2,000 of the 6,500 residents in the proposed annexation area cast their ballots.

Other areas in the county with significant unincorporated areas include North County and South County. According to the county’s Sixth County Council District Community Area study, roughly 40% of South County residents live in unincorporated areas.
