Two local post offices may close their doors

A south county post office and a Crestwood post office are among the more than 400 branches of the U.S. Postal Service that may close their doors in the near future.

Post offices at South County Center and Crestwood Plaza are part of a list of 413 Postal Service branches nationwide currently under review for possible consolidation.

“The current deep national recession has exacerbated erosion in First-Class Mail volumes due to a change in consumer preferences to electronic systems for instant messaging, invoicing and bill payment,” according to a Postal Service news release. “Mail volume in 2009 is projected to be as much as 20 billion fewer pieces than in 2008.”

No final actions will be taken regarding branch closings until after Oct. 2, according to the release.
