Trash-transfer station hearing postponed

A public hearing on a proposal to construct a trash-transfer station on Baumgartner Road in Oakville now will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Oakville Senior High School gymnasium, 5557 Mil-burn Road.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources originally had planned to conduct the public hearing on Fred Weber Inc.’s proposal to construct the trash-transfer station at 5219 Baumgartner Road Tuesday, March 18.

The department has requested supplementary information regarding Weber’s application, according to a news release from Rep. Walt Bivins, R-Oakville.

“This proposal has drawn strong reaction from my constituents, so I am pleased the Department of Natural Resources is seeking all the relevant facts. I know citizens are eager to attend the public hearing, but the postponement will ensure they are able to review the final submission and develop a complete response,” Bivins stated.

“The proposed transfer station will be used to receive non-hazardous solid municipal waste and will transfer the waste from small trucks onto larger vehicles that would transfer the waste to a permitted facility,” according to a DNR news release.

County Counselor Pat Redington settled a lawsuit in October with attorneys for Fred Weber to allow the company to construct the trash-transfer station.

The County Council previously had denied the station with a unanimous vote.

Residents can review a copy of the proposed permit application at the Cliff Cave Branch Public Library, 5430 Telegraph Road.

A copy also is available upon request at the department’s Solid Waste Management Program at 1730 E. Elm St. in Jefferson City. To request a file review, residents first must call (573) 751-3043 or send a fax request to Rhonda Loveall, custodian of records, at (573) 522-3344.

Questions and comments regarding the proposed transfer station or the department’s role in regulating solid-waste-processing facilities may be sent to the Department of Natural Resources, Solid Waste Management Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102-0176.

Comments also can be made by calling Charlene Fitch at (800) 361-4827 or (573) 751-5401 or sending a fax to (573) 526-3902. The department gives equal consideration to written comments and oral public hearing testimony.
