Sunset Hills mayor to face three challengers in April

Staff report

While Sunset Hills Mayor Mike Svoboda faces three challengers in his bid for re-election this April, several area municipal and school board incumbents are unopposed for another term.

Filing for the Tuesday, April 6, election closed last week. Besides the Sunset Hills mayoral race, aldermanic seats are up for election in Crestwood, Green Park and Sunset Hills.

In the Lindbergh and Mehlville school districts, an equal number of candidates have filed for the two open seats on each board of education. Therefore, no election will be conducted in those districts, according to state law.

Crestwood

Aldermanic seats are up for election in each of the city’s four wards. Seats currently held by Mimi Duncan of Ward 1; Jeff Schlink of Ward 2; Jerry Miguel of Ward 3; and John Foote of Ward 4 are up for election.

The seats carry three-year terms.

Duncan, Schlink and Miguel have filed — and are unopposed — for re-election in their respective wards. In Ward 4, Foote has filed, as has former alderman Steve Nieder.

Green Park

Aldermanic seats from each of the city’s three wards are up for election. Seats currently held by Ward 1 Alderman Carol Hamilton, Ward 2 Alderman Jackie Wilson and Ward 3 Alderman Fred Baras are up for election.

The seats carry two-year terms.

Hamilton, Wilson and Baras all have filed for re-election and are unopposed.

Sunset Hills

The mayoral seat, which carries a two-year term, is up for election. Besides Svoboda, Ward 1 Alderman Bill Nolan, Mary Wymer and Ward 4 Alderman Frank Gregory have filed for the mayoral post.

Aldermanic seats from each of the city’s four wards also are up for election. Seats currently held by Frank Hardy of Ward 1, Thomas Hrastich of Ward 2, Stephen Webb of Ward 3 and Gregory of Ward 4 are up for election.

The seats carry two-year terms.

Hardy, Hrastich and Webb have filed for re-election and are unopposed.

Svoboda’s wife, Claudia, has filed for the Ward 4 aldermanic seat and is unopposed to replace Gregory.

Grantwood Village

Board of Trustees seats currently held by Cathy Forand and Nancy Humes are up for election. The seats carry two-year terms.

Forand, Humes and Bill Hypes have filed.

Lindbergh Schools

Seats on the Lindbergh Board of Education currently held by Vice President Vic Lenz and David Peek were up for election.

The seats carry three-year terms.

Lenz and Kara Horton Gotsch have filed.

Peek also filed for re-election but since has withdrawn his name from candidacy.

Because the number of candidates who have filed equals the number of open seats, no election will take place April 6.

Mehlville School District

School board seats currently held by Vice President Venki Palamand and Secretary Larry Felton were up for election. The seats carry three-year terms.

The two incumbents have filed and are unopposed for re-election. Therefore, no election will take place April 6.

St. Louis Community College

One of the Subdistrict 4 seat on the Board of Trustees is up for election.

The seat, currently held by Chair Robert Nelson of Kirkwood, carries a six-year term. Subdistrict 4 includes the school districts of Parkway, Kirkwood, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Rockwood, Valley Park, Meramec Valley and parts of Jefferson and Franklin counties.

Nelson, Tina Odo of Wildwood, Robert Johns of Glendale and Craig Larson of Manchester have filed.
