The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen voted to change the speed limit from 60 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour on Route 30 between 1,700 feet west of Maurer Industrial/Rahning Road and the western city limits at its May 14 meeting.

The city recently received a letter from the Missouri Department of Transportation stating that a speed study was conducted on an approximately 20 mile stretch of MO 30, from Interstate 270 to Route BB in Jefferson County. The study considered crash history, roadway geometrics, number of driveways and prevailing speed data, and concluded that reducing the speed limit would be beneficial. The total area affected by the speed limit change in Sunset Hills is approximately one mile.

“MoDOT performs these types of studies based on feedback from residents, municipalities and from their own observations. MoDOT was aware that Sunset Hills was concerned about the speed vehicles were traveling in this area and the recent accidents,” City Administrator Brittany Gillett said.

When it came time to vote, Ward 1 Alderman Ann McMunn made a motion to suspend the rules so the ordinance could be read for a second time. This passed unanimously. After the second reading, a roll call vote was held and all eight aldermen voted in favor, passing the ordinance.
