The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen approved its first compensation increase in 30 years for itself and the mayor at its Sept. 10 meeting.
Aldermen currently receive $400 a month while the mayor receives $500. The rates had not been adjusted since 1994.
Under the approved ordinances, aldermen will receive $600 a month, while the mayor’s stipend will double to $1,000.
The ordinance to increase the mayoral stipend was approved by a vote of 7-1, with Ward 3 Alderman Cathy Friedmann as the only vote against it. The ordinance increasing the aldermanic stipend passed by a vote of 6-2, with Friedmann and Ward 2 Alderman Casey Wong opposed.
The new rates will not take effect until April 2025 or April 2026, depending on the election cycle. That means the current mayor and aldermen will not get a pay raise unless they are reelected in one of the upcoming election cycles.
