Sixth District Democratic incumbent Steve Stenger secured another four years on the County Council in last week’s election.

Stenger, of Affton, who was elected to the council in November 2008, defeated Green Park Ward 1 Alderman Tony Pousosa by more than 7,000 votes. Stenger received 37,511 votes, with Pousosa taking 30,392 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Stenger told the Call he is honored to serve the 6th District for another four years and is looking forward to interacting with the community and “being a voice for south county.”

The 6th District councilman also said there are some “ongoing” betterment projects he has been involved with in the district that he will continue to be a part of, including a facade improvement program.

“The (St. Louis County) Port Authority has money set aside for facade improvements in south county,” Stenger said, “and I helped to ID businesses that would qualify for this program, basically giving facelifts to businesses, particularly as they face the streets in the community, and it’s money that’s available to improve, essentially, the aesthetics of structures in south county.”

He also said the council is working on an agenda for the next four years, and as it is appropriate the council “will bring that out and meet (its) agenda items.” Though he did not give specifics, Stenger said some of those items are “strategic in nature” and he will be “setting those out in a very public fashion.”

Pousosa, who has served on the Green Park Board of Aldermen since 2007, told the Call he was pleased with the election results considering he was not well-known outside of his municipality.

“I think we did really well,” he said. “I think that the overall response was impressive for not being known outside the municipality of Green Park.”

Pousosa said he hopes to keep serving Green Park and making sure improvements in the city continue.

“We’ll just kind of take things from there,” he said.

As far as running for political office again, Pousosa said that will “depend on how things are going” and that it is “too early to say.”

Overall, Pousosa said he gave the election his best shot.

“I worked it hard,” Pousosa said. “So I can’t hang my head or be disappointed with the results. I actually did a lot better than I thought would as I said before with (not being known outside of Green Park).”
