Sarah Rivers, a St. Louis-native and the current multi-state event coordinator for The GOD’S CHILD Project — a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty — recently returned from volunteering in Guatemala. Rivers called the trip “transformative.”

While in the Central American country, Rivers and other volunteers worked on a variety of projects, including building a new home for a family who had lost theirs in the Santa María earthquake that occurred on July 8.

“Seeing the gratitude the family had for us was truly inspiring,” Rivers said. “It was an incredible experience to know that the work of our hands would have such a lasting impact on their lives.”

Additionally, Rivers spent time at the Guatemalan charity La Asociación Nuestros Ahijados (ANA) in Antigua distributing fresh vegetables to families in need, caring for infants recovering from malnutrition and assisting with an after-school program that supports children with homework and provides a safe environment to learn and play. She also participated in home visits with children and families in the organization’s sponsorship program and worked with the Mothers’ Club, a group where women learn to make and sell handmade crafts and jewelry while attending free workshops that promote financial independence and personal growth.

“It’s humbling and inspiring to witness how these programs transform lives and bring hope to people who need it most. I am so thankful to work for an organization that is making a true difference in the world,” Rivers said.“This experience also reminded me that we sometimes take for granted even the smallest blessings, things that mean the world to others.”
