Voters from across St. Louis County flocked to the polls on Aug. 4, leading to a higher-than-average turnout for a primary election.
According to data gathered by the St. Louis County election board, approximately 39.75% of registered voters voted County-wide; this is up significantly from 2024 when just 30.73% did. 2022 saw an even lower turnout, with 28.07%. The only primary in recent history with similar turnout rates was in 2020, when 39.53% of registered voters voted.
The numbers vary somewhat depending on the area. When comparing voter turnout by State House District, State House District 96 was the highest in South County by a decent margin, with a voter turnout of 45.62%. Similar races in the area — in which only one candidate from each party ran, making the primary not competitive — saw turnouts of 39.8% (State House District 95) and 36.66% (State House District 94). At 28.19%, State House District 93 had the lowest voter turnout, though incumbent Bridget Walsh Moore (D-Affton) was the only candidate to file for the district’s house seat, possibly accounting for the lower number of voters.
The only competitive primary race in South County was between Republicans Kenneth Abram and Mirhad Hasanovic, who vied for a chance to represent Missouri House District 92. Abram came out on top, receiving 85.3% (2,351 Votes) to Hasanovic’s 14.7% (405 Votes). State House District 92 had a 35.34% voter turnout.
Data also broke down voter turnout by County Council District. District 6 — encompassing the majority of South County, including Sappington, Green Park, St. George, Wilbur Park, Bella Villa, Mehlville, Oakville and a large portion of unincorporated county — had a 36.18% voter turnout. District 3, which includes Sunset Hills and Fenton, had a 42.87% voter turnout. District 5 had the highest turnout of all County Council Districts at 46.44%. Though mainly situated north of South County, District 5 includes Crestwood, Grantwood Village and some of Affton; it also represents Webster Groves, Glendale, Rock Hill, Marlborough, Shrewsbury, Maplewood, Brentwood and Richmond Heights.
As far as turnout by municipality, the highest percentage in South County was the Town of Grantwood Village at 52.85%, closely followed by the City of Crestwood at 50.27%. The City of Fenton had a turnout of 44.79%, Sunset Hills had a turnout of 44.5%, the Village of Marlborough had a turnout of 35.59%, the City of Lakeshire had a turnout of 33.91% and the City of Green Park had a turnout of 33.41%. Unincorporated St. Louis County had a turnout of 37.16%.
Voter turnout by school district had the largest gap between the highest and lowest turnout rates in South County, with Lindbergh Schools at 43.82%, the highest, and the Hancock Place School District at 22.34%, the lowest. The Mehlville School District had a turnout rate of 37.09%, the Affton School District had a turnout rate of 37.06% and the Bayless School District had a turnout rate of 28.02%.
