“Spike for Mike,” a fund-raising volleyball tournament for an Oakville college senior, will take place Sunday, May 18, at Oakville Senior High School, 5557 Milburn Road.
Michael Maniaci of Oakville, a senior at the University of Missouri-Columbia, was critically injured March 26 after being hit by a car while on spring break in Panama City Beach, Fla.
He suffered multiple injuries, the most significant of which was severe brain trauma.
He still is in a coma, but doctors believe he is in a waking-up phase, according to a news release. He currently is undergoing therapy at a rehabilitation hospital in St. Louis that specializes in brain injuries.
Maniaci was an avid volleyball player. He played volleyball for Oakville Senior High School, the High Performance Volleyball Club and for the club team at Mizzou.
The coed volleyball tournament for those 16 years old and older will help relieve the Maniaci family of some of the costs associated with the accident and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The cost to participate in the tournament is $150 and checks should be made payable to the Michael Maniaci Benefit Fund. To register, call (314) 805-5021 or e-mail cherylsazama@sbcglobal.net. An after-tournament party will take place at Crusoe’s.
More information about Maniaci’s recovery is available at www.carepages.com.
