After roughly four weeks of practicing together, the Mehlville Senior Senior High School girls’ golf team should be getting comfortable.
Senior Jocelyn Wallinger is expected to be an ideal leader for the new and returning faces on the Panthers’ squad, and fellow seniors Jessie Ghormley and Amanda Maloney will be leaders by example, as well.
“We have three seniors. They’re really good at taking everyone in under their wing and making them feel comfortable,” Mehlville head coach Gary Pearson said.
Pearson can first rely on his seniors to post low scores to ease the pressure off the rest of his team.
“I’ve got most of my team back. We have five or six kids returning which I haven’t always had,” Pearson said. “Our numbers have been good recently, but this year we have some good players returning.”
Junior Rachel Eddy joins Wallinger at the top of the Mehlville class.
“Those two have a good chance to be very competitive and play well,” the Mehlville head coach said.
The Panthers placed ninth of 11 teams at last year’s district tournament at the Crown Pointe Golf Club in Farmington.
They hope to be represented individually or as a team at the state championship for the first time since 2007 when Alisha Mat-thews placed sixth.
“One thing that the kids don’t do is play enough during the rest of the year, but they work hard during the season. It’s a good group of girls that work hard and are very coachable,” Pearson said.
