A local non-profit organization will sponsor its fourth annual run/walk this weekend to raise money for research into adolescent depression and suicide.
Communities Healing Adolescent Depression and Suicide, or CHADS, Coalition for Mental Health will sponsor “Race Out of the Darkness” at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Stone Hill Shelter at Tower Grove Park, 4256 Magnolia Ave.
Besides a 5-kilometer run, a 3-kilometer walk and a 1-mile fun run, a 10-kilometer run has been added this year.
Also new this year is a Critters Who Care venue, encouraging walkers only to bring their pet. CHADS Coalition is dedicated to advance the prevention and knowledge of adolescent suicide through research, advocacy and education in the Midwest.
Co-founders Marian and Larry McCord of Oakville started the organization after their son Chad, 18, lost his battle with depression in April 2004. Proceeds from the run/walk will go toward local suicide-prevention programs and research into teen depression and suicide. The cost of the run/walk is $25. The cost of the fun run for children is $10 and the cost of the Critters Who Care event is $5 per pet. Registration is available at www.chadscoalition.org.
