Despite winning the 95th Missouri House District seat by over 61% in November, Rep. Michael O’Donnell (R-Oakville) resigned from the Missouri House just days after being sworn in to become the state commissioner of securities.
O’Donnell, taking over the position from Douglas Jacoby, was appointed as the state commissioner of securities by new Secretary of State Denny Hoskins. Hoskins, a Republican, was elected by a vote of over 57% in November against Democrat Barbara Phifer.
“I am grateful for the trust placed in me by my constituents and the opportunities I have had to contribute to the legislative process,” O’Donnell wrote in his resignation letter. “I look forward to continuing my service to Missouri in this new capacity and am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for my successor in the 95th district.”
Due to his resignation, the 95th District – covering the most-southern part of St. Louis County – will soon face a special election. New Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe will call for the election, with Republican and Democratic committees selecting nominees for the race. Although the district was once competitive, it has recently leaned heavily Republican.
Until a new representative is elected to fill O’Donnell’s vacant seat, residents of the 95th district can continue to call the Missouri House of Representatives at 573-751-3762 or send emails to Rep. Jim Murphy at Jim.Murphy@house.mo.gov for constituent service requests.
