Missouri state Rep. Jim Murphy, R-Oakville, announced last month that he supports term limits on Congress.
The announcement came in a press release from the nonpartisan group U.S. Term Limits, whose mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress.
“Jim’s support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. American needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians,” USTL President Philip Blumel stated of Murphy’s support in the press release.
Murphy was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2018.
The 1995 U.S. Supreme Court Case Thornton v. U.S. Term Limits, the court opined that term limits on U.S. Senators and Congressmen could only be achieved through a constitutional amendment. According to USTL Executive Director Nick Tomboulides, “the best change of imposing term limits on Congress is through an Article V Proposal Convention of state legislatures.”
‘That Constitution allows for amendments to be proposed by … 2/3 of the states. … That is why it is important to get buy-in from state legislators. … Jim knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal,” Tomboulides stated. At least 38 states must ratify the amendment once proposed.
According to a nationwide poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, a national survey research and strategic services company led by brothers John and Jim McLaughlin, who worked on President Donald Trump’s campaign’s 2020 polling team, a constitutional amendment for term limits has “an overwhelming 82%” of bipartisan voter support.
