Mehlville School District Facilities Director Mike Gegg provided updates on several summer construction projects at the Board of Education meeting Aug. 19.

Prop R projects worked on this summer included updating roofing, HVAC units and asphalt sealing and striping while the lone Prop S project was Oakville High’s baseball field.

Several roofing projects were underway, with a few completed over the summer. Gegg said part of the project at Beasley Elementary forced the temporary removal of two solar panels, but the panels were placed back in late August. The rest of that project and the full John Cary Early Childhood project are slated to be completed next summer.

The pool building roofing project at Mehlville High School will start in mid-October after supplies are delivered.

Seven schools had asphalt resealed and striped and three had full removal and replacement finished over the summer. All projects “went off without a hitch,” Gegg said.

The HVAC unit at Oakville Elementary gymnasium was oversized according to Gegg, and it would cause a humidity problem indoors. The unit was replaced with a smaller one, but a couple defective parts had to be replaced, so the project should wrap up soon.

Gegg said the baseball fields are “about 60 percent complete” with sod application scheduled this month. The full project is expected to be completed Oct. 31.

Board member Patrick McKelvey, an OHS alumnus, said he appreciates the patience of the people at OHS.

“I know their softball season has been disrupted a little bit, but we partnered with a local church who is letting us use their facilities, and in return they’ll be able to use our track,” McKelvey said. “Shoutout to (Rich Sturm) … we appreciate his flexibility.”
