To the editor:
Hello my name is Jeremiah A. Miller. I am a seventh grader from Oakville Middle School and a scout from Troop 648. I am writing to you because the communications merit badge had a requirement to reach out to a newspaper, and I like presidents.
President Jimmy Carter was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He was a good father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, president, state senator, governor and friend. He passed away peacefully with family by his side on Dec. 29, 2024.
He was a United States Navy sailor and a peanut farmer. Peanuts and cotton are just a few of the products the family farmed.
President Carter retired from a prestigious military career after his father died in 1953.
President Carter was the only U.S. president to be a centenarian at 100 years and 89 days old at the time of his death.
He built houses for Habitat for Humanity with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away a year earlier at the age of 96. They were the longest married presidential couple in history, being married for 77 years.
He was a scout master for his three boys for Troop 101 in Plains, Georgia. A few of his awards were the Silver Beaver (in case you don’t know what the Silver Beaver is, (it’s) an award for adult leaders in scouting) and the Nobel Peace Prize.
He is survived by four children, 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
I would like to thank him for his years of service to his state and his country.
Jeremiah A. Miller
