The Mehlville High School girls softball team looks to regroup and strengthen under new leadership after navigating a challenging 2024 season. 

With a 5-18 overall record and a 1-5 mark in District 2 play, the Panthers are aiming for improvement as they enter a critical rebuild phase. 

Notable victories from last season include a 21–9 win over Pattonville and a pair of 13–0 shutouts (vs. Nerinx Hall and Affton), but the Panthers suffered significant setbacks in several lopsided losses. 

Despite a tough season, Mehlville still boasts strong offensive returners and versatile contributors.

 Jenna Benson (.400 batting average, .451 OBP, .477 slugging — 26 hits, 9 RBIs in 71 plate appearances) leads the list of returning players. 

Hannah Wilferd (.390 average, .429 OBP, .525 slugging — 23 hits, 13 RBIs) will also return for another season, Tori Siebum (.390 average, .463 OBP, .525 slugging — 23 hits, 14 RBIs) and Kayla Kovach (.390 OBP, .422 slugging — 10 hits, 10 RBIs, 2 home runs) will also return for the Panthers. Additionally, Chloe Gralike (.303 average, 10 hits, 6 RBIs in 36 plate appearances) and Courtney Fritsche (.265 average, solid on-base work with 7 walks and 8 RBIs) will see time on the field this season. 

As far as pitching goes, Maddy Meyer appeared in 18 games last season, getting 11 starts, winning 3 of those. In 89 innings, Mayer had just over a 7.50 ERA (earned run average). Gralike and Tyra Dickerson should too see time on the mound for Mehlville this season.

With revamped coaching strategies and newfound resolve, the Panthers are focused on growth. The returning players offer experience and provide a solid foundation to build on, especially if improvements can be made in run prevention and situational hitting, while potential position battles may invigorate practice intensity and lineup competition. The key to this season will be translating individual talent into team cohesion and building momentum as the season wears on. 

As far as goals for the season, it’s quite simple: improvement. Short-term, the team hopes to secure more wins early to build momentum and improve district standings. Focus mid-way through the season will be cultivating offensive consistency and stabilizing the pitching rotation with players like Mayer and Gralike, while long-term plans include building a culture of competitiveness and ensuring the Panthers are prepared to push deeper into postseason play.
