The Oakville Tigers football squad is learning how to overcome injuries and still come out on top of their opponent.
The Tigers pieced together enough to get a 35-14 win over Webster Groves on Oct. 18.
“Offensively, we are still banged up in several spots, so for us, we have learned how to navigate what we do and maximize the players we have,” Oakville head football coach Mike Genge said. “I do feel like our players and coaches are really trusting each other which helps immensely as the postseason comes.”
“Workhorse” running back Edin Mulalic once again came up huge for the Tigers. Mulalic put up 184 yards on 33 carries. He added a pair of rushing touchdowns as well.
With one regular season game left, Mulalic has a good chance to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark on the season, despite missing a game earlier in the season.
“Edin is a workhorse,” Genge said. Right now he sits at 866 yards and that is after missing the game against Seckman due to being sick.”
Along with having potential to-be 1,000-yard rusher, Oakville has a slim chance to have a 1,000-yard receiver as well. Josh Williams sits at 700 yards on the season, so it would take a game of epic proportions, but there is always a chance. Quarterback Max Bradley has already eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the season.
“Having a 1000-yard rusher is always an awesome accomplishment,” Genge said. “We have the chance to have a 1000-yard rusher, passer and receiver all in the same year.”
The Tigers defense put together an impressive performance, holding Webster Groves to just 127 yards of total offense in the game. The Oakville defense forced three fumbles and also grabbed two interceptions in the win.
“I have been really proud of our defense over the course of the past couple of weeks,” the Tigers coach said. “For 90% of the games we have been pretty solid, our focus has been to simplify, play fast, and get to the football. If we continue to do those things we can be a pretty good unit.”
Oakville closed out the season with a home contest against Northwest on Oct. 25 – losing 27-31. It was a big game for the Tigers with the playoffs looming. Win and Oakville stays home for a district game, but lose and Oakville hits the road. Genge, of course, would have liked to be at home.
“We know we control our own fate for Week 10,” he said. “If we take care of business we will be at home, if we don’t we will be on the road. It is very important for us to remain focused on one week at a time and do what we do.”
