After dropping back-to-back games for the first time this season, the Oakville Tigers girls basketball team is back on the winning track, putting together a three-game win streak.
Tigers head coach Laura Bishop said her young squad is starting to show more confidence offensively.
“Our biggest struggle has been consistent scoring and rebounding,” Bishop said. “The girls are playing better together and getting more confident on the offensive side of the floor.”
Sitting at 8-4, the Tigers have recently reeled off wins over St. Pius X, Affton and Lindbergh. In Oakville’s 46-30 win over the Flyers on Jan. 16, three players scored in the double digits. Savannah Bentrup led all scorers with 14 points, while Alivia Schnur added 12 and Olivia Scholz added 11, securing Oakville’s victory. Bentrup also grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked six shots in the win. She leads Oakville with an average of 17 points, 11 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.
“Out of our top three leading scorers, there are two freshmen and a sophomore,” she said. “It’s fun to have youth and so much progress to make every game.”
With a winning record at the halfway point of the season, Bishop is happy with where her team currently is, but knows there are still improvements to be made.
“Overall, I am pleased with where we are at halfway through with starting such a young group,” she said.
As the Tigers prepare to tackle the second half of the season, Bishop is looking for improvement on the defensive side of the ball, as well as continuing to build more scoring opportunities offensively.
“I would like us to be able to work harder more consistently on the defensive side of the floor and keep growing as a group with the offense,” Bishop said. “We need to keep progressing with playing together well as a team and always be the hardest working group out there.”
Oakville will host Fox on Jan. 21 before traveling to Parkway Central on Jan. 24.
