Editor’s note: While the new name and logo were discussed during the Aug. 19 Park Board meeting, neither has been formally approved by the Board of Aldermen. During the meeting, Eilien Ramirez said, “They already voted on the name and chose the Cliffs as their favorite.” This referred only to the Park Board selecting its preferred option—not to any official adoption. No final decision has been made at this point. The proposed name and logo are expected to be presented at the Board of Aldermen’s Sept. 9 meeting, though approval is not guaranteed.
A proposed name for the new Crestwood community center at Whitecliff Park has been floating around: The Cliffs. The name was announced at the Aug. 19 Park Board meeting, where board members and attendees also saw renderings of the community center and reviewed two logo concepts.
“To get to this point, I worked with Mayor (Scott) Shipley, Eilien (Ramirez) and city administrator Kris Simpson to go through some initial rounds of designs, and threw some stuff at the board,” Crestwood communications manager AJ McNaughton said.
From renderings of The Cliffs, the building will have a modern craftsman architectural style — blending wood, stone and metal with geometric lines and some detailing. The facility was designed by Bond Architects.
According to a staff report, the two logo concepts aimed to reflect the architectural style in the graphic design. Unanimously, Park Board members and public commenters preferred the logo concept that featured a geometric
house and tree on a stone base, with a bolder font. The other logo concept utilized an acorn symbol: referring back to the oak tree, from which Crestwood got its name.

“I really like them,” Park Board chairperson Debra Hewing said. “I like the building one. I was drawn to that from the beginning, and looking at the front of the building (in the renderings), it has the same look. I think that’s neat, that it defines the building that we’re building.”
The chosen logo was described in a staff report as “warm, welcoming, rooted in ecology.” Board members and commenters had a few minor suggestions for McNaughton, who presented the two concepts, but the overall design was well-liked.
The aforementioned report says the mission for the new center is to “provide a warm, inclusive and high quality gathering place where residents of all ages can connect, play, celebrate and thrive — close to home.”
The space will be used for everyday activities as well as special occasions, like weddings and private events.
Construction on the new community center began this summer. The expected opening date for The Cliffs is 2027, as construction is expected to take between 18 and 24 months.
