Motion to rescind automobile allowance fails

A motion to rescind Crestwood City Administrator Don Greer’s monthly car allowance was defeated by the Board of Aldermen with a 6-1 vote during a closed session last week.

Ward 3 Alderman Jerry Miguel made the motion during a June 22 closed session to rescind Greer’s $830-per-month car allowance. Miguel’s motion was seconded by Ward 3 Alderman Don Maddox.

Miguel voted in favor of the motion. Besides Maddox, opposed were Acting Mayor Richard Breeding of Ward 1, Ward 2 Alderman Tim Trueblood, Ward 2 Alderman Jim Kelleher, Ward 4 Alderman Tom Fagan and Ward 4 Alderman Pat Duwe. Ward 1 Alderman Richard LaBore was absent.

The board voted 6-2 Sept. 23 to approve the automobile stipend for Greer. As a result of the vote, the city no longer provides an automobile to the city administrator for his use and Greer is responsible for gas, insurance and maintenance of his vehicle.

Opposed Sept. 23 were Breeding and former Ward 3 Alderman “Bernie” Alexander, who was defeated by Miguel last April.

Miguel’s criticism of the car allowance dates back to shortly after it was approved.

At a candidate forum in March, Miguel said, “Unfortunately, Alderman Alexander was unable to convince some of the other aldermen to her view. Eight-hundred-thirty dollars a month is an excessive automobile allowance and, in my opinion, the city administration will not have credibility until that goes away.”
