Lindbergh’s inability to convert on opportunities, as well as costly turnovers, caused the Flyers to fall to Rockwood Summit, 21-17 on Sept. 6 in Week 2 of the high school football season.
The loss dropped Lindbergh to a 1-1 record for the season so far.
Coach Nathan Norman acknowledged the mistakes were costly for his team.
“We definitely had opportunities to win the game,” Norman said. “Ultimately, the game was decided on a few costly turnovers and missed assignments on our part.”
Summit jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a 65-yard touchdown pass from Blane Branscum to Jasahn Tiller.
Early in the second quarter, Lindbergh tied it after a 5-yard run from quarterback Noah Norman. Summit’s Tyrique Williams put the Hawks up 14-7 after a 3-yard touchdown run. Lindbergh was able to tie the game once again after Norman connected with Jack Hessler on a 5-yard pass. The score was 14-14 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the lone score was from Branscum’s second touchdown pass of the evening. This time he connected with Chase Martin for a 50-yard strike. Summit led 21-14 going into the final quarter.
Lindbergh was able to make it a 21-17 game on a 33-yard field goal from Jackson Bailey, but the Flyers were unable to get any closer in the game.
Lindbergh’s rushing attack was solid for the evening, as Norman led the way with 23 carries for 129 yards. The team combined for 46 carries for 234 yards, an average of over 5 yards a carry.
“We did have success running the ball,” Norman said. “We will continue working on our overall offensive attack.”
While Summit had an effective offensive attack through the air and on the ground, the Flyers defense held its own for the most part.
“The defense played well with the exception of a couple big plays,” Norman said. “One was the result of a mental error and another a result of poor angles.”
Norman said after two games, he’s happy with what he has seen from his team.
“I am proud of the way the team has competed the first two weeks,” the Flyers coach said. “As long as they stay hungry and keep working, we have a chance.”
Lindbergh followed the loss to Summit with a win 28-14 vs. Ladue Horton Watkins on Sept. 13 and 24-0 win vs. Hazelwood Central on Sept. 19.
