MFPD board OKs ’13 health benefits

Board of Directors approves ’13 employee health benefits

Employee health benefits for 2013 recently were approved by the Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors.

Board Treasurer Bonnie Stegman and board Secretary Ed Ryan voted to approve the employee health benefits. Board Chairman Aaron Hilmer was not present for the Nov. 7 open meeting, but attended a closed session that followed.

For health insurance, the district will switch to Coventry from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, a premium increase of 8.8 percent. Anthem had proposed a 19.5-percent increase.

Coventry’s annual premium total for combined plans totals $1,055,179 — $85,348 more than what the district currently pays Anthem — $969,831. For 2013, Anthem proposed a premium of $1,158,949.

For dental insurance, the district will switch to Delta Dental from Humana, a premium decrease of 1.64 percent.

Delta Dental’s annual premium of $120,900 is $2,011 less than the $122,911 the district currently pays Humana.

Vision insurance will be unchanged as the district will remain with Humana at no increase in cost. The district currently pays an annual premium of $16,017.

For basic life, accidental death and dismemberment and long-term disability the district will switch to Unum from Standard, a premium decrease of 14.42 percent.

Unum’s annual premium will be $78,105, $13,157 less than the $91,262 the district currently pays Standard.
