Mehlville junior a bright star on the horizon

When one looks back and sees women who have made a difference in the lives of others, it is rewarding.

And when one can look forward and see there is a local young woman who is going to make a big difference in people’s lives, it truly is exciting.

Cara Stuckel is one of those bright stars on the horizon.

A junior at Mehlville Senior High School, Cara is involved in almost everything. Besides serving on the Junior Executive Committee, she is a member of the Student Council, the Science Club, the National Honor Society and the French Club. She also is an active member of the golf team and varsity soccer.

Equally as much energy goes into her volunteer work, most of which centers on the environment. She has been involved at Hagemann Elementary in the Leadership Environmental Action Project and she interned at the Great Rivers Environmental Law Center downtown and at the Litzinger Road Ecology Center.

Last summer Cara volunteered at the St. Louis Children’s Zoo Camp in a project promoting sound ecology. For her efforts, she was chosen as the Young Environmentalist of the Year.

She has done all of that while maintaining a 3.8 grade-point average at Mehlville and scoring a 26 on her ACT.

In the meantime, she loves coming home after school to be with her four younger brothers and sisters; Clare, a Mehlville freshman; Alex, 13, a Washington Middle School pupil; Maddy, 9; and Armanda, 8.

“I love it,” she said. “Most of my friends only have one or two siblings, but I come home and there’s this whole house full of people waiting for me. It’s great.”

For the future, after she completes her senior year in 2005, she said she may go into an environment studies program or study international law.

“I will definitely go to college, I just haven’t decided where, but I want it to be somewhere other than St. Louis so that I can see more of what life is all about,” she said.

With all she has going for her, this young woman has a pretty good idea about life and is well on her way to becoming a “Woman in History” who will make great strides toward improving life for everyone.
