While the Mehlville Panthers offense may not be clicking on all cylinders, it certainly had enough octane for Kent Heinemann’s squad to win against Parkway South on Oct. 18.
“We’re still not playing well consistently enough on offense,” Heinemann said. “But, we seem to be making plays when we need to.”
That Friday night, those plays came from Jeremiah Shelton. The Panthers used a three-touchdown performance from the senior running back en route to a 25-20 victory over the Patriots.
“Our offensive line really played well Friday night and Jeremiah ran the ball incredibly well,” Heinemann said. “He has been working so hard and it was nice to see him have the kind of game he had Friday night.”
Shelton not only had three touchdowns, but he racked up some yardage with 194 yards on 33 carries. Shelton had touchdown runs of 2, 1 and 24 yards in the game.
Mehlville’s other receiver, Jordan Hannam-Lewis, finished with two catches for 48 yards. Quarterback Cameron Trautman ended the evening 4-for-11 for 94 yards.
Defensively, Marquis Jackson had quite a game for Mehlville. The junior linebacker collected nine tackles and also had a key fumble recovery in the game for the Panthers.
“Marquise has a great nose for the ball and is a very physical player,” Heinemann said. “He was huge for us Friday night.”
The Panthers closed out the regular season with a showdown against Lindbergh, a rival for Mehlville. Before the game against Mehlville on Oct. 25, the Flyers were 6-2 on the season, winning eight consecutive games over the Panthers, including a 35-0 victory last season.
