Mehlville board picks topics for annual retreat

Subjects for board meetings and agenda format will be among the topics the Mehlville Board of Education will discuss during its annual retreat Sept. 8.

Board members last week selected topics for the retreat, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 7700 Fine Road.

Other topics will include:

• Meeting mechanics/efficiency/effectiveness.

• Board development, self-evaluation and reviewing 2011-2012 goals.

• Community engagement and board interaction with the media.

• Board representation on committees related to the board’s memorandum of understanding with the Mehlville National Education Association.

One item discussed Aug. 23 as a potential talking point for the meeting, but ultimately not selected, was “planning for a workshop to develop a common set of measurements or metrics to assess student achievement,” according to information provided by the board.

Superintendent Eric Knost suggested to the board that he present the aforementioned topic to the board at a later date, going beyond “public metrics” such as the Missouri Assessment Program and the ACT.

“Not that those things aren’t important,” Knost said, “but the fact that we drill down our district to individual kids, and the kind of probing and the assessing that we do …

“I’d like to take the board, a little bit, intentionally into the minutia so you can understand that there are significant metrics that mean a lot to us in the individual efforts of student achievement.”
