Mehlville board eyes appointment of member to pay-study panel

Mehlville board to consider annual retreat dates, topics

The Mehlville Board of Education is scheduled to select at least one member to represent the board on a performance/merit-pay study committee when it meets today — July 26.

The Board of Education meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Administration Building, 3120 Lemay Ferry Road.

The establishment of the study committee is stipulated in a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, with the Mehlville National Education Association, which the board approved in May.

“The study committee will research performance pay and various strategies and components relevant to the Mehlville School District,” the MOU states. “This study will include, but is not limited to, a review of current literature, development of a program and a feasibility study.”

A final report and recommendation from the committee for the 2014-2015 school year is due by March 1, 2014, according to the MOU.

The MOU was approved in May by the Board of Education with a 5-2 vote. Board President Venki Palamand and board member Ron Fedorchak were opposed.

The two also voted against the district’s 2012-2013 academic calendar, citing a lack of increased instructional time.

Board members Mark Stoner and Rich Franz supported a merit-based compensation plan for teachers.

“They didn’t get a merit plan, but they got a commitment to develop it, and they exchanged that for two step increases over the next two years,” Fedorchak said at the time.

In other business tonight, the board is scheduled to consider:

• Appointing a custodian of records.

• Adjusting facility and turf usage fees.

• Approving instructional/supervisional and athletics additional compensation schedule.

• Approving dates and topics for the board’s annual retreat.
